Whoo hooo for new windows (and we've got some free ones too!)

AJ has been waiting for a nice day to replace the windows in the kitchen and yesterday the temp hovered right around a glorious 50 degrees. Remember this last photo with the insulation hanging out of the window? It's not there anymore! The photo on the right is the view from the outside before it was replaced.
Absolutely nothing between us and the great outdoors... Makes us long for spring!
AJ needed something large to nail to the window to keep the cold air from coming in, and yes, that is a Snuggie nailed to our window.
He popped that window right in after fitting the sill with a couple of boards to raise the height (the new windows are wider but a smidge shorter).
And here is is working on the outside of the window to make it wider. He used an electric saw to cut away at the clapboard.

AJ was exhausted at the end of the day so the frame on the inside is going to wait until later this week but here is the almost finished product:

You know what I love about it? That it's timeless. There were windows, wainscoting and tables that style in the 1800s. I definitely don't want my house to look like it's from Little House on the Prairie days but I do want it to have a simple timeless quality. I don't want to tire from it in five years, I want us to still be in love with the classic decisions we made.
I hate to waste things so I put one of the old windows to good use (our other one fell and the glass shattered). We've got a few more, anyone want a vintage window? Leave a comment on the blog if you want one!

We are lovers of light... so when we get a little more dough on our hands this is what we'll tackle next:

Can't you just picture what a nearly full length window and a french door will do to that space? Can you imagine all the light in the kitchen... ohhhh I can't wait... but I've got to...
Of course I've got to pop one more photo in for good measure. This little guy also has a fascination with light...

Signing off to do a little more work while Drew sleeps next to me, go running and read the fabulous new House Beautiful that just came in the mail today.

  4. You guys are amazing! I don't know how you manage to get so much done with a newborn, but I enjoy looking at your posts.

Is your orchid real or fake? It looks wonderfully healthy for a real plant. If it is a fake one, could you share where you got it? I'm currently looking for a realistic looking fake orchid.
