white kitchen & butcher block counters

A couple people have asked me for tips on inexpensively redoing their kitchen. I think that one of the cheapest ways would be to paint your cabinets (here is a good tutorial on how to do that well from Young House Love) and install some butcher block counters, it'll lighten up your whole kitchen. What do you think about these kitchens as inspiration, do you like the lighter or darker butcher block? Which is your favorite?

All of the photos were taken from DecorPad... except for the middle one, which is from IKEA's webpage.

  1. Darker - and I LOVE the ceiling in the second photo. Wood ceilings! Amazing.

  2. I like different elements of each. First, I am not a fan of wasted space. So, even though the cabinet detail in the first looks interesting I like the cabinets in the second picture with above storage for larger serving items. I never seem to have enough storage for serving dishes in any kitchen I've had. I would always go with stainless appliances. The sink in pic 3 is my favorite because I love the bib front. Always a fan of subway tile like in pic 4. Concur with Cherish about the ceiling in the second...awesome! Love the big island with seating and storage in pic 5 but like the darker wood in pic 2. Not blown away by any of the lighting options. Ok...you asked for an opinion. That was certainly a lot of opinion. Can you tell that I spend a lot of time thinking about decore. Hoping to have an opportunity to put my ideas into practice in our own place not too far down the road. Have fun.

  3. number 4 is my fav. reminds me of jamie oliver's kitchen way back when he was shooting the naked chef. although, 50% like the tiles, 50% the wood finish color. as your question is solely about wood counter tops, i second the comment about the second photo. very crisp. hides stains and nicks better than a lighter surface too.

  4. Dark, for sure! I recently saw the staining process on Welcome to Heardmont - seems to easy! I'm a huge fan of white kitchens, so I love all of these images. :) I think I'm going to have fun looking through your blog!
