It was the Little Guy's birthday last week and we had a party with family for him on Friday... I did a red wagon themed party because he has a minor obsession with the Radio Flyer wagon. So I went a little crazy on the red and white theme. But sometimes crazy is fun, right? :)
My sister, Kim, came over the morning of the party and was a balloon blowing machine. I was Swiffering the floor and the next minute I look over and half the floor is covered in red balloons. It was fabulous... The night before while AJ and I watched Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy (can you say "nerds"?) I made the flag banners out of paper I found at Michaels for 4 for a $1... it was the easiest craft ever.
Like this view of our unfinished ceiling? :)
I found this frame on the side of the road and spray painted it, and a few others I had in the basement, Rustoleum's Glossy Red. Never again will I buy the 97 cent spray paint again. This stuff is amazing and goes on beautifully. That is, if you don't try to do it outside in 30 degree weather while the wind is blowing. Yep, just call me stupid. I learned my lesson and didn't do that again. :)
The water glasses are from Pottery Barn and the fun straws are from the Dollar Store. I feel like this paragraph categorizes my life pretty well... things from our house are either from the side of the road or Pottery Barn and there is nothing a good coat of paint can't fix. :)
This might be my favorite part of the decorations. I lined up the favors on our hutch and decorated with a mini flag banner and some additional red painted frames. The little bowl is holding licorice bits that I had left over from cutting them to fit in the jars.
To make the bunting I just cut triangles of the fun paper, folded over the top and taped in some white string. Bam. Instant flag banner.
I asked my mom and Danielle to save glass jars for me so that I could use them for party favors. I then spray painted the tops... but of course, I'm looking at this photo and I see that I must have missed the side of this jar top... oops. You can't win them all.
I love this photo of Drew walking around with his birthday balloon that Kim gave him clipped to his pants. He loves that balloon and still plays with it now. Only it's attached to his high chair now... not his pants.
We did a huge salad bar and ordered pizza... it was the easiest meal ever. And we just finished salad leftovers last night. Yum.
Growing up my Dad would make amazing cakes for our birthday so I decided to continue the tradition and have him make one for Drew's first birthday. Isn't it adorable?
The red and white stripped runner you see on the table is some cloth I picked up from IKEA with every intention of sewing it into a runner. I ran out of time and just put it on the table without hemming anything... and you know what? It worked just as well and saved me from going crazy trying to sew it. Have I mentioned that sewing isn't my #1 gift?
Here we are trying to blow out the candles on Drew's cake. He obviously only wanted to dig his hands into the cake and eat it.(Notice us holding his hands back.) He's a smart kid. :)
This is the best photo we got of the family. One of us was incredibly wiggly... and it wasn't AJ or me.
We did gifts in his red wagon... it was like Christmas with the number of toys he got!
Auntie Kim reading Drew a book... maybe the only time of the night he stopped moving for 10 seconds.
AJ's mom and stepdad, April and Kerry, and his sister, Meredith, made the trek from New York just for Drew's party! It was so great to have them here! April and Kerry are in Cancun now... anyone else jealous?
Mom and Dad gave Drew this adorable fire engine for his birthday... it's so classic and handsome (sort of like my little guy!I'm a cheesy mom, what can I say?). This is what a lot of nights look like around the Migonis home... chases around the kitchen / living room circle. When you live in a tiny house that's possible. :)
Drew loves his new maraca... don't you just love his face in this photo? (And I'm loving my new riding boots (Christmas gift!), but you can't see them too well in this photo...)
But instead of planning a party, or cleaning the house because it looks like a Drew tornado went through it, like I should do while Drew is napping I'm going to read my David Baldacci mystery. I think I just jinxed myself. He's upstairs crying after sleeping for LESS THAN 40 MINUTES! Darn. Darn. Darn.
I am linking this up to Between Naps on the Porch.

Fabulous job, Jen! I love the red, white and wagon theme. Your house is perf for any party.
Beautiful, Jen. You did such a great job on the party and everything was so thoughtful!!! These pics are so fun!
Thanks, Amy! Have any more tables you want me to decorate?:)
And Kim, of course none of this could be done without you. And you think I'm joking... I'd still be blowing up balloons.
I love it!! Great theme! And...you are the only person I know who can find great stuff on the side of the road and turn them into beautiful usable items around the house.
Amazing! I love all the adorable details. Looks like a great party!
Awesome job on the party!! I need to get planning Sophia's 5th for next month. Love it. :)
Everything is just adorable! Love all the ideas you shared, and the cake your dad decorated is amazing! Thanks for sharing!

Very inspiring to everyone and it shows with a good "eye" and little $$$ anything is possible. Keep it up, it's fun to watch all of your creative energies on this blog!!
Jen, this is a fabulous birthday party. You just make it look so easy! LOVE the banner, and table runner. I have to say I almost gasped when you said your dad used to decorate your birthday cakes. My dad did too. He did wedding cakes too! I'm so glad you stopped by Take Six. In two seconds I will be your newest follower!! ;0)
So cute (just like your little guy). I love your board and batten and all the white in your rooms. I love to mix expensive with free too. And with spray paint you get what you pay for (like nail polish!). Thanks for sharing and Happy Birthday to Drew!

Aside from everything else that is fabulous and 1st birthday's are very special ---- the riding boots are cool!
You must ride, so assume Drew will do the same in the not-too-distant future.
Your decorations are fab. It's really cool that your Dad (really???) made that cake - totally aswesome.
Drew is a lucky Red Rider boy! Great details in this party, but my favorite are the red and white striped straws, vintage and modern at the same time. Thanks for sharing. ~CJ
What cute family photos!!!!! Your DAD made that cake?!!?! Bravo and kudos to him!!! What an extraordinary job! I think it's so cool that he did it for you as child and is continuing the tradition! Your sister did a great job with the balloons, too! Truly a family affair! Off topic, but the judge's paneling in your house looks really great! I would love to have it in our library! Hope you are having a good weekend, and happy belated to little Drew!
