This post has received a lot of traffic via Pinterest... keep in mind when choosing this color that it is actually darker and more gray than it photographed because of the lighting. It was still gorgeous when done but not quite as "minty".
I have been DYING to share this post with you... AJ found this dresser on the side of the road when we were flipping the house in Gloucester. He thought we could use it to stage the house when we went to sell it but... we never sold it. We decided to just rent it so we didn't need to stage anything but I finally got around to redoing the dresser and I'm in love with how it turned out (despite that I am going to sell it).
It's pretty bad, isn't it? There weren't any knobs so we had to pound the back of it to get the drawers out.
The side has some damage where the wood was pulling away.
Pretty rough, right? Can't you see why I was dying to give it a makeover? I'm typing this as I listen to Adele ... I'm pretty sure there is no one else who I'd rather be listening to while blogging. Or running. Or cooking. She's basically amazing... she's even more amazing than this transformation here:
Isn't it incredible what some good paint will do? I put a couple of coats of Kilz Primer on it, filled in holes with wood glue, used some adhesive to fix spots that were flaking off and then topped it off with some of Benjamin Moore's Azores (it's a Pottery Barn color that Annie suggested to me).
Are you not just in love with this color? It's my life color. Well, this or Ballard Designs Spa Linen color. It's a toss up.
I've been in love with Anthropologie's knobs for a while but ... mmm... Anthropologie is pricy. I'm cheap. But, while AJ and I were in New York for Christmas and April and Kerry gave us a date day AJ and I ended up at Hobby Lobby and I scored these fabulous glass ones for 50% off so each knob was $4 (total $26). All drawers needed their pull holes filled in so I did that with wood filler (amazing stuff, first time I've used it) and then used my detail sander (Black and Decker's Mouse) that AJ gave me for Christmas to sand all the residue off.
And some outtakes... :) These make me smile because somehow that sippy cup gets thrown everywhere. I think we have three thrown over our first floor now.
I'm selling the dresser for $200. Let me know if you are interested! :)
In an effort to improve the photos I take for the blog I'm going to try to list what settings I use so I can remember them later... and maybe help anyone else who is a total beginner with the Canon Rebel.
All "after" photos were taken with a shutter speed of 1/6, aperture F10 and an ISO 1600. I didn't use a flash and I had two windows for natural light on either size of the dresser.
Thanks for joining me for the second Makeover Monday!
I'm linking up to Metamorphosis Monday at Between Naps on the Porch.

Beautiful work Jenny! I love the color of the dresser!
ReplyDeleteYou definitely made silk from a sow's ear. That's an old saying my grandmother used to say when something bad becomes something wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWow! What a beautiful dresser. What a great makeover you gave it. I love the color and the pops of white that you decorated it with!! So pretty.

ReplyDeleteThanks for your encouraging comments! It was a fun project... even if the coats of paint took forever to make sure they covered the dark stain. I can't wait to check out all of your blogs! :)
ReplyDeletejt - it's amazing. truly. Love the color, but totally delighted by your choice of drawer pulls. Is there a Hobby Lobby anywhere around here or just in NY?
ReplyDeleteOh Jen, that's gorrrgeous. I might buy it from you if I was in the market!
ReplyDeleteYour dresser came out great, what a beautiful soft color! Love the knobs too. If you get a chance stop by and see our dress redo. Will be your newest follower, Laura - Cottage and Broome

Is this color Azores? Or Azure? I realy want to use this paint to re-do a couple of my coffee tables but I can't find it on the potterybarn website or benjamin moore
ReplyDeleteDo you mind telling us the exact color of the Azore collection?? I am loving this color and need it for my redo. You can email me directly too!

thanks, great work!
Hi Ali,
ReplyDeleteThe exact color is called Azores. It looks darker or lighter depending on the lighting in the room, so if you look at the paint swatch it'll look darker than the pics on the blog.
Hope this helps!
Jen
This is beautiful. What is in the birdcage?
ReplyDeleteThey look like shells, I have a cream birdcage and a ton of shells I've been saving, so now I know exactly what to do with it!
DeleteI'm sorry I missed this original comment, Linda, sometimes my comment notifier does bizarre things. It is actually crumped up book pages... I saw the idea in a shop near where my husband is from and I loved it.
DeleteI just love this dresser! It's the only pin on my Painted Furniture pinboard lol. Is it more of a blue or more of a green? I just purchase a crusty old, gigantic dresser online and I'm going to use it as a media center in our playroom. This color if more of a blue is perfect!
ReplyDeleteI am in love with this dresser! Just found you through Pinterest and must say you did a GORGEOUS job with this one!!! Amazing! Thanks for letting us know the colour too! xo
ReplyDeleteI love this makeover!! Ive been looking for knobs just like that.
ReplyDeleteI am building a new house and used this color on
ReplyDeleteMy walls in master bedroom. I love it. Wanted that beachy serene look.
I bet it's just gorgeous!
DeleteLove the color! It's gorgeous!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I wish I could use this color all over my house!
DeleteI have your dresser's long lost cousin sitting in my garage as we speak. It was also a roadside rescue. I seriously did a double take when I saw yours. Mine has turned legs on the front with wheels rather than the Queen Anne style (I think that's what that is called). My two younger girls share a room and are in need of a dresser. You just inspired me to make this over for them.
ReplyDeleteHave fun making it over! :) I'd love to see pics of your before and after shots!
DeleteSeriously gorgeous! Beautiful dresser and the color is fantastic. I found this post on Pinterest and I found myself poking around your blog. Following you now - I love your style :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Chelsea! No idea how I missed seeing this comment! :)

ReplyDeleteFell in love with the color of your dresser so I went to Ben Moore and got the chip (Azores AF-495). It's entirely different than your color, it's more like a medium green w/0 blue. Could the Pottery Barn Kids color be different than Azores AF-495? I would appreciate any suggestions you could give me.-Thank You
The paint on the dresser does look lighter than the paint on the chip you got, for sure... it's a funny color because it'll look different in different lights. I lightened the photograph a little bit because I was still learning to use my manual camera at that point and couldn't get the lighting correct in the room so the color will never look mint greeny in real life but it will look lighter than the paint chip, at least that has been my experience painting it over multiple layers of oil based primer.
DeleteI heard from someone else recently that she was surprised by the color of the paint as well so I added an addendum to the top of the post, so hopefully that is the first thing people will see, that says I did have to lighten the photograph.
Hope this helps!
Jen
Looks great!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great transformation for that dresser. I do love that color. Thanks for sharing. So many sites won't tell you the paint color, so thanks a million.
ReplyDeleteWow! what a beautiful color, I just love everything about it. Great job.
ReplyDeleteI will buy it I love it Hannahreavis@rocketmail.com
ReplyDeleteI will buy it!! Gayle.Benson1@Comcast.net..still available???
ReplyDeletesold over a year ago. :(
DeleteHi Jen! I have a dresser sitting in my garage that looks as banged up as yours use to! Mine also has the veneer peeling off (like the side of yours did). Can you tell me how you fixed that? Did you peel it all off? or just sand it down? or maybe used wood filler? Mine is peeling on the front, so I would like a smooth finish when it's redone.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Ashley
