Here is a project I've been wanting to get to for... ohhh... forever. I loved these lamps, and I picked them up at Christmas Tree Shops, of all places! I think they were something like $10 each a few years ago. The blue went perfectly with my room then but now I wanted something that matched the gray in our master a little better. Here is the before shot:
An up close and personal shot... as you can see the shades were looking a little worse for the wear:
So, for a while I'd had my eye on this great Robert Allen gray bird fabric from JoAnn Fabrics. I wasn't sure if it was too off-white to be a pillow on the bed but I knew having it as a lampshade would work well since it wasn't touching a white bedspread.
After laying it flat I folded it in half (I measured how much I'd need to fit my two lampshades at JoAnn's) and then cut it right down the middle.
Because the shades are slightly wider at the bottom the fabric looked like this when I wrapped it (of course I forgot to take the photo before I cut the fabric so I just put it back where it was pre-cut):
Then I used some fabric glue (also from JoAnn's) and rolled the hem so I wouldn't see any unfinished edges and glued it to the underside of the lampshade.
It ended up looking something like this. As you can see it is a little tricky working around the wires (is that what they are called?) and doing the hem on the outside of the shade (see top right of photo):
I held each roll in place so the glue would dry with binder clips and that worked perfectly. The fabric glue is a quick dry!
Now for the finished product! I love the bird dish with the bird pattern on the lampshade.
I need your advice on this next shot... is it too much to make a pillow for the bed if it's just a strip of the same fabric down the middle (and then a solid border on the sides)? Mom, I need you to weigh in. :)
Can someone do me a favor and "pin" this? I'm off of my beloved Pinterest during Lent (and yes, every day I want to pin something so I remember it but instead I have piles of magazine photos ready to pin. :))
I owe you all a good update on Meredith, my sister-in-law, after her 10 hour heart surgery yesterday. Long story short, it went really well. I'm going to visit her today (hopefully!) and will update more after that. Have a wonderful day!
What a great way to update some lamps. I think the fabric looks great on the shades as well as on the pillow. You could use a contrasting or coordinating ribbon on both as well. Maybe trim the top and bottom of the lampshade with the ribbon for just a little extra something.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the fabric also looks amazing on the pillow. Not too busy or matchy
ReplyDeleteThe shades look fabulous Jen! I think the pillow would look great with a coordinating fabric on the ends and the birds in the middle. If you didn't like a seam showing you could use ribbon/trim as mentioned above.

Love the lamp! As a fellow NE girl, don't you just love a bargain? I don't know what I would do without a quick CTS fix every once in a while.

Love this! Thanks for sharing! I am going to try and attempt this with a shade in my living room....
ReplyDeleteLove love love!! I have a secret obsession with birds this spring!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous. My only question is that i thought lamp shades were made from specific type of fabric that were more transparent? Do you still get a descent amount of light from the lamp since its double up on the shade?
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful job! I love them!!
ReplyDeleteThe shades look great! I have a couple to re-do this week. I think the fabric on a pillow would be fantastic, with the solid fabric on the ends, like you mentioned. It's great to tie everything together. Glad to hear the surgery went well!
ReplyDeleteGreat tip on making the lamp look custom! Pinned it for you on my FUN IDEAS board.
ReplyDeleteI think the shade looks gorgeous!! The fabric would be gorgeous as a pillow teamed up with maybe a black and dark grey pillow to bring the colours together??
ReplyDeleteYou've done an amazing job with the rest of your house I'm sure if you go with your gut it will look GORGEOUS!!
So happy for Meredith and your whole family. Many prayers being said for her.
ReplyDeletePillow looks wonderful with the lamp. Very tasteful.
Your lamp looks great! I pinned it to my DIY board.
ReplyDeleteI have several old lamps I would like to update. Do you (or anyone who is reading this) have an inexpensive source for the drum shaped shades?
Looking at photos in this post, it seems like you need something "angular" (not a decor word, I know, but maybe you understand) in your room. What about a rectangle of the bird fabric framed in dark gray ribbon, on an otherwise white pillow? White back, white edges, and your lamp shade fabric edged in ribbon?
I pinned it with a link to my garden, home and party pinterest. I didn't see a "pin it" on your site. What sacrifice during lent! :-)

It would really tie in if the shade
ReplyDeletewas turned to show the birds...a
trim in grey grosgrain or your
favorite "punch" color. The suggestion of using horizontal
band across white pillow cover with
matching ribbon treatment same as lamp shade is a good "completer"
idea. Prayers for Meredith. Giving
up Pininterest...now that is really
a Lenten fast...stalwart one...

i love the fabric! i don't think a pillow would be too matchy at all...i think it really ties it in!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute and easy way to update a lampshade. I love the fabric you chose...it's a great accent to the colors in your room.
ReplyDeleteI love this - salvaging the lampshades with a little fabric and glue. I of course made sure to pin it for you:
