Our inspiration:
This is what I've got so far... two things: pansies and a $4 mini arborvitae from Home Depot. The boxes desperately need something else... suggestions for something that won't die right away? I wanted to put boxwoods in here too but they were too expensive and AJ suggested some pussy willows.
A view from farther away, it's hard to see the window boxes but I shot it this way so that you could drool with envy over our grass. :)
But I have made some progress on our little boxwood planters on the front porch. They looked a little lonely with just the boxwood bush so I covered the base in pansies. I then hung up our planters and maybe we will fill them with ferns, they lasted us for months last year... a whole heckuva lot longer than the petunias I bought earlier in the season.
Today's was just a short little post because I need to start studying for my real estate lisensing test... I just booked it yesterday! Off to study in the gorgeous weather outside while AJ is running errands with Drew! Oh, and lastly, a quick photo I forgot to share earlier this week, too bad Drew just wanted to get down and play:
See you on Monday with an outdoor makeover... :)
QUESTIONS:
1. What do you have planned for this weekend?
2. Any healthy dinner recommendations? I feel like I'm stuck in a bit of a rut.
Hi Jen,
ReplyDeleteHere's the link to a healthy pasta meal that I just tried this week from Cooking Light, Farfalle with Creamy Wild Mushroom Sauce.

I couldn't find the exotic mushroom mix so I used a mix of Crimini and regular sliced mushrooms.
Love all the outside work you're doing!
Love, Mom

Jen, just discovered you a few days ago through the Centsational miss Kate!! I've been reading through your archives and you are quickly becoming one of my fave blogs to check in on. You and your Drew and AJ are adorable and I absolutely love your taste and aesthetic and everything you've done to your lovely home. Love.love.love your west elm striped curtains in your master. I have their striped yellow ones in our kids' bathroom. Also, can't wait to try some of your recipes. Looking forward to "watching" all the continued changes to your home. Oh, and if you're looking for some new dinner options you have to check out Kelly over at eat-yourself-skinny.com....she's a complete doll and has incredible & healthy recipes!! I like putting succulents in my window boxes and hanging planters because they don't need to be watered as much. Kalanchoe comes to mind. They aren't frost-hardy so you might want to wait a bit if they interest you.
ReplyDeleteLove the curb appeal! Jon and I ripped out a crazy amount of overgrown evergreen plants in our front garden beds and have spent this spring planting a few things that flower. We mulched this weekend, which was HUGE. We basically had a dirt pile for the past month. Favorite new recipe is crock pot short ribs with figs, http://www.health-bent.com/beef/braised-short-ribs-with-figs
ReplyDeleteThey look great! My mom always says you need a thriller, spiller and filler...sweat potato vine is really pretty. I'm also looking into making window boxes...what kind of wood did you use?
ReplyDeleteEverything is looking BEAUTIFUL! I'd love to do window boxes, but they wouldn't look right on my home. :) Boosting curb appeal takes a lot of time and patience! Good for yall for getting your hands dirty! :)

So my mantra for window boxes & other container gardens are "thriller, spiller, filler." You have 2 of the three-- thriller in your arborvitae that's tall and the pansies are a filler. YOu need something to spill over. One of my favorites lately is creeping jenny. It comes in a variety of colors and you can get it places like Home Depot.
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
I just found your blog and I love how the photos in this post shout "New England"! Oh, how I miss it! I'll be visiting often so I can get a taste of home :)
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI have purchased said abrovitie for very same reasons. Now it is over 8 feet tall and pruned as a topiary. My hubby does not like to stunt the growth in anything so it is soo tall. You can cut the roots (as in bonsai technics) to keep it small. Germander is great because it can be trimmed like a petit boxwood and it flowers.
I am thinking of the hydrangeas you get at the grocery at Easter for pots.... but not sure if they will flower all summer. They can winter over in the ground and be left there. Boxwood here at the beginning of season can be $9.99 for the little ones.
So you have helped me! I may use some Germander (herb) which here in IL will winter over in the ground for next year.
YOur home is lovely. Best wishes on your Realtors Exam. Perhaps i will be by one day asking for tips on rental purchasing!
With Kindness,
Mary
