Spring Window Boxes... Boston Style

Last Thursday AJ and I went into the city to visit Meredith and go for a run. We have our fave running routes by the ocean or the golf course here but there is nothing like the Beacon Hill brownstones in Manchester. We decided to run through the Hill and then along the Charles for a 3ish mile loop. AJ made sure we walked through the finish line area of the Marathon (it was sacred ground :))... they had already set up the bleachers for yesterday's race. My favorite part of the run was right behind Mass General (Meredith's hospital). The streets look like the photo below and were filled with amazing window boxes. We were in the city again yesterday for Marathon Monday and I snapped some photos of my fave boxes... and these were only on one street.

I wish I could tell you every kind of flower in the boxes but I don't have that much of a green thumb. What I did notice appreciating about the majority of the boxes were the varying heights of the flowers and ivy (or flowers) spilling out of the boxes.

Doesn't this one look so lush?

I just love mini bushes in window boxes... this one was one of my favorites because of the use of so many different materials (bushes, pussy willows, flowers and ivy).

This one looked so manicured... boxwoods make me swoon. :)

Are you sensing a trend here? Half my photos have boxwoods in them. :)

Some people just did a simple job with little planters by their door and I loved it!

Maybe when we are in the city later this week I'll snap a few more inspiration photos. There was this one little flower shop that was particularly inspiring to me. I'm pretty sure it was ridiculously expensive too. :)

Tell me:
Have you done any spring planting yet?
Are you more of a flower or veggie garden kind of person?

  1. Oh, this post makes me miss Boston! Especially in the spring right as things are blooming and the snow is gone but it isn't yet a million-gillion degrees outside. I'm not much of a runner, but my now-husband and I loved to stroll through Beacon hill, window shop, brunching...

  6. I planted my first flowers yesterday (well past frost dates here in VA) and it is cute I think: I reused my son's little wheelbarrow and it's now a planter.
I also live in a historic town, so I love seeing the pictures of Boston. Want more!

  7. Oh wow, I have never seen window boxes so beautifully planted. I love that they all had spring flowers and all looked to be maintained, nothing worse than a window box of dead/dying plants. I have planted a lot this spring but still have more do to, this was the inspiration I needed.
