Makeover Monday: Baby Adirondack Chair and Pillow

I found this children's Adirondack chair in our friend's trash the other day. She was planning on rehabbing it but the back piece was rotted out and the right chair leg was too short.

The chair was engraved with "Will" front and center, you can see some good wood filler there. After AJ secured the chair with screws and added the little odd piece to the right leg the chair is now sturdy.

Drew wanted to get in on the action... he loves chairs in his own size.
And wearing rain boots with his diapers. Don't ask me why.

I used Rustoleum's 2x the cover white spray paint after sanding and wiping it down and then made a little nautical pillow to cuten up his chair. I know the wedge on the right leg isn't great looking but it makes it function better.

The pillow was easy breezy to make. I knew I wanted something the size of a potholder so I used that as a template when cutting out some of the navy fabric I had leftover from another project. Then, as I was cleaning out Drew's drawers yesterday morning I threw a couple of stained onsies in the trash... but the backside was still good looking so I used that to cut out a little shape for my pillow.

I knew I wanted something nautical and decided on an anchor.

I then sewed up the pillow and used Fast Tack Upholstry Adhesive that I had from making our headboard and attached the anchor to the fabric.

The pillow needed a little something extra for texture so I added the twine running through the top of the anchor.

It was definitely more difficult than I thought to cut the onsie fabric, it tore pretty easily as you can see in this photo.

All in all the pillow and painting the chair took about an hour. AJ probably took about half an hour to fix the wobblyness of the chair. Gotta love quick projects!

  1. Could you comment (or do a post!) on the durability of your carrara? We're planning a kitchen rehab and I love it but am afraid of staining/ honing/ chipping... especially with litlte ones!

  2. The chair is ADORABLE!!! Great job!
    Tip:
An iron on stabilizer on the back of the onsie fabric before you cut it out will help prevent those tears and make the fabric easier to work with.

  3. Love it. We were at a party the other night and SJ kept trying to sit in another little girl's adirondack chair. There was practically a war between the 2-year olds over the chair! :)

  4. you should put the same size wedge on the left leg of the chair and make it look like it was made that way!! Adorable!! Love the nautical theme! That's why we live here!

  5. The chair came out so cute and I love the pillow You have a lot of creativity. I like the addition of the twine.
If you can't get your hands on stabilizer like another poster commented you can always use freezer paper as the stabilizer. Works just as good

  6. Very cute. To make the wedge less noticeable, you could add a piece to the actual leg.

  7. I love these ideas about the stabilizers! Thank you!!!!

As for the wedge, one on the other side would make it look more legit. Perfect idea!

Anna, love it... why is it that kids always want what isn't theirs? :)
