Makeover Monday: Our Kitchen Ceiling

We have been working hard on our kitchen ceiling for the past few weeks. Remember when it looked like this? We had ripped it out a year before, painted it and hoped we could make it look like the cool rustic ceilings you see sometimes. It didn't look as great as anticipated and it felt a little construction-y to me.

After pre-painting the drywall outside like I mentioned in this post and then covering the seams with slightly thinner boards than we have on our wainscoting our ceiling has come out looking like this (we still have to patch the screw holes and finish painting some of the boards.

These next couple of photos show the last bit of crown molding that needs to go up around the microwave cabinet and around the glass cabinet.

Here are a few more close ups of the crown molding. I haven't finished painting the ceiling boards because we were in Maine this past week but I suppose the unpainted nature of it clearly delineates where the crown molding starts.

I thought I'd share with you a couple of photos from our time in Maine...
This first one is from our drive up there. We stopped in Kittery and grabbed an ice-cream cone for Drew (and a sundae for me) from McDonalds. Nothing like an ice-cream cone to keep a wiggly little guy sitting mostly still for part of the drive. :)

I love this photo of my guys reading. :)

Hope you are having a fabulous Monday!

  3. I think your kitchen is so pretty! One thing I've been curious about, so I thought I'd ask here. I noticed that you have hard wood flooring in your kitchen. How does that stand up to water, since with doing dishes (even with a dishwasher, I wash the larger pots and pans), and cleaning the counters and the table, have you had any warping ata all? Do tell, pretty please!!

  5. Thanks Everyone!
Carol Jane: the color is Martha Stewart's Driftwood Gray. I am in love with it and it looks great in all different lights!

Sue: The hardwood floor has worked beautifully for us... even with a toddler. We haven't had any problems with warping due to water, although we think we may have a slight warping problem because we needed an additional supporting beam in the basement. We've had some scratches on the floor because of things being dragged over it that shouldn't have been but for the most part it's worn really well! I would definitely do it again.
